Post-16 Transport

It is the responsibility of guardians to apply for post-16 transport assistance.

School recommends you do this as early as possible.

Key Information on Post-16 Transport for SEN Pupils with EHCPs

 Annual Application Required

  • Post-16 SEN pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) must apply for transport each year.
  • Additional Support
Extra assistance is not automatically provided. Kent County Council (KCC) will review requests through an appeal process, considering factors such as:
    • Distance and accessibility
    • Medical and mobility needs
    • Financial hardship
    • Religious or belief preferences
  • KCC 16+ Travel Saver Card
Available to most pupils aged 16–18. Families on low incomes may qualify for a reduced rate.
  • Personal Transport Budget (PTB)
Pupils will now receive a PTB instead of arranged transport. This budget can be used for:
    • Fuel costs
    • Bus or train fares
    • Taxi fares
    • Childcare for siblings while transporting the pupil

If there is a shortfall, a bursary may be available. Apply to the post-16 provider first.

  • Budget Calculation
The amount depends on the distance between home and college.
  • Payment Schedule
Payments are made on the 15th of each month for 11 months.
  • Impact on Benefits
Receiving a PTB will not affect other benefits.
